COLOR PSYCHOLOGY IN THE INTERIOR

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

Nowadays in our frenetic lifestyle we don’t pay attention to understand our surrounding environment and we accept it only on a superficial level. But it is essential that we live in harmonic dwellings surrounded by positive energy, balancing between function and aesthetic to improve our way of life and to maintain our mental and physical health. It is scientifically proved that colors and atmosphere can reflect our mood and state of mind.

I would like to analyze and explain the meaning of the main colors used in the interior and the latest trends combining it with some simple advices.

1.White

Let’s start with the #white color. Often associated with #minimalistic or #Nordic style it represents purity and cleanliness. Gives light and has positive connotation. That’s why is usually used in public spaces such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. Because it gives peace and accelerates healing both mentally and physically. White can help smaller spaces appear larger and it can also make rooms look livelier, fresher and crisper.

2.Blue

Blue is one of the strongest hues of the color psychology spectrum.

Deep, bold hues, such as navy and royal feeling of calm and tranquility at home which makes them great for bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces.

Blue is an important color in interior design theory and it affects the human mind profoundly. There is a reason why #blue is the perfect color for bedrooms. It instills a sense of serenity and peace and can be a very soothing #color. In bathrooms, it can be used for creating a spa or a relax zone. This elegant and reserved color can also represent formality. It is best when paired with white or other lighter hues. For sure don’t exaggerate with blue because it can be depressing.

3.Yellow

According to color psychology in interior design, #yellow is the color of warmth, wisdom, prosperity, sympathy and cowardice. A room colored in yellow can look cheerful, friendly and airy. It is nice to use it as an accent but avoid using it in large amounts as it can be over stimulating. If you like this color use it in a right shade and proportion that resonates with you and that gives the expression of your personality.

4. Orange

People who love red but are not too fond of its aggressive impact can replace it safely with #orange. This fun, energetic color is ideal for kid’s room, dining room, office, and even the living room. Of course used in a balanced quantity. It symbolizes courage and hospitality. It also makes you feel energetic, adventurous and friendly. You can use it as an accent in the kitchen because it increases appetite and it is the perfect heart of any room.

5. Grey

Grey is a color that is most often associated with industrial environments which are utilitarian and functional. It gives a sense of belonging, inclusion, acceptance. Grey is the onliest color that doesn’t have any positive psychological properties. But in the interior it is neutral and preferred when the purpose is to emphasize something else. Personally I suggest the use of either warm greys (yellow based) or cool greys (blue based) to avoid feelings like anxiety and depression when speaking of interiors. Grey is best avoided in the bedroom, nurseries and any rooms for infants and children. It should also be avoided in any rooms that require creativity.

6.Red

Red is one of the most dramatic hues in the coloring book and one of the most attractive colors when it comes to rousing emotions. It is often coupled with sentiments such as passion, excitement and energy. Ambition, action and will power are additional qualities attached to the primary hue and that’s why red can be a productive choice for home offices and creative spaces.

The color is not only powerful in its most basic form in interior design psychology, but also has many beautiful shades including bordeaux, crimson, tomato #red, etc. Whether you want to channel a rich, traditional aesthetic or a pop-art feel, red can provide a solution.

7. Black

Psychological effects of #black are associated with evil, mourning and death. However, it is also the color of wisdom. Black, in interior design theory, is always used in small amounts with contrasting, complementary colors. When used right, it can add depth and timeless elegance to a room. Avoid using black in large quantities as it can seem oppressive.

Now after this short introduction of the meaning and usability of the main colors in the Interior Design as a whole I would like to talk more about Fashion and Interior Design Trends of 2021. So this is the next theme that I am going to present you!
